Does anyone have experience with their schnauzer picking/licking it's butt suddenly and many times a day as if something was biting them?  The anal glands have been expressed recently but has not taken care of the problem...

Matthias has done that on occasion for the past two years.  It's as if he MUST get to whatever is bugging him or he'll go crazy.  Once he "catches" his tail and bites a few times, he's perfectly fine.  For all I know, maybe something did bite him.

Only when the fleas start to get really bad. Used to use that as the indicator to begin the comforts for the year before we went on it year round. And if Kings anal glands are bothering him he usually will scoot is rear across the area rug.
Most likely something is biting him as to what it is who can say without seeing any culprits!

All three of my pups do this on occasion. They don't have fleas so I don't know why they do it.

Muka will jump up from his bed sometimes and move really quickly. As if he has fleas and one's bitten him, though it's been well over a year since he's had fleas. (Unless they are picking them up and their Comfortis is killing them so I never find them.)

Also Pukalu has always licked his anus, but not in a rush as if it's bothering him.

Claudia, it is very important that you understand about expressing anal glands. I need to write a topic on it, but for now I just put the subject in the title of this old post so we can find it searching topic titles:

Some more odds and ends about Buddy (incl. Expressing Anal Glands)

Be sure to read all my posts on both pages.

I think everyone's on the right track.  Odds are it's:

1.) Fleas
2.) Anal glad problems
3.) Worm infection

Claudia,

Has the problem continued?

I came back to this post because Pukalu is doing it so much now. If it doesn't subside, we already have an appointment next week for his skin issues.

He's always been a "cleaner dog," licking himself like a cat. And he cleans Muka's ears, too.

He's always licked his anus to the point of it annoying me! I just gave up and let him do it and got over it. It's not an all day thing, just a few times a day I think to clean himself.

But now he's doing it much more often.

I agree with Tiffany's list:  fleas, anal gland, or worms, and I'll add one more:  allergies to food.  Sometimes food allergies, I'm told, can leave a burning sensation around the anus.

Oh, I hadn't thought to take a stool sample next week! Just put that on my calendar.

Thanks,

It could be anything from parasites, allergies, or either the anal sacs or those other pair of glands full...besides the anal sacs, there are also another set of glands that often fill and infect.
