Severe Nasal Congestion in 15 Year-old MS - Antibiotics Failing
« on: November 05, 2013, 12:24:09 AM »
Hello, everyone -- This is my first time posting to this forum.  My 15-year-old MS Harry suddenly came down with severe nasal congestion three weeks ago.  When he tries to breath through his nose it sounds like a buzz-saw (and he hasn't figured out he can breath through his mouth. :-))  He's been diagnosed with a short bacilli bacterial infection.  We've tried four different antibiotics with very little change.  He's really fading: peeing himself, poor appetite, etc.  Our regular vet and a second opinion vet are pretty well baffled as to what to do for him.

Has anyone here run into this?  Do you have any suggestions?  The situation is obviously getting quite dire.

Nancy,

I am so sorry to hear this, and welcome to the forum.

My first reaction was to quick grab the baby aspirator bulb.  Babies don't know how to mouth breath either and this causes them great distress too.

I can tell you know that the pup is not going to like it but it will clear out any congestion that is blocking the airway.

The only other thing is that it could be inflamed passage, not congestion.

I wish you the best and comfort.  I know this is a difficult time for you.  Hugs.

Oh Nancy...I am so sorry.  I joined this forum a couple of years ago because I had a very ill dog.

Is there an Internal Medicine expert in your area?  Your dog might benefit from an appointment.  Also, your Vet can consult with Cornell Wet School for about $100.00.

I like Ellie's suction idea.  I worked with newborns when I was a student a million years ago.  A small eye dropper might work.  However,if it's inflammation that is cutting off air, then a steroid would decrease the swelling fairly quickly.  I have to do both together to breath when my nasal passage close.

It maybe something else though...infections can go to other places in your body and it just could be causing him to struggle.  I can remember for which infection this was for, but we once had to combine 2 antibiotics to get Theodore over the hump of an infection.

I'm glad you are here Nancy.  This is a tough one.

PS,  I'm just remembering...your Vet can do a culture of the infection to test with different antibiotic/medicines.  In fact, it may give you a better idea of what type of infection it is.

I would also try a internal medicine vet if available.  We were referred to a specialty veterinary hospital for our previous dachshund and saw an internal medicine vet.  He prescribed a combination of medicines that really helped her.  Our regular vet later told me that she didn't know that the prescribed medicine could help her specific problem.

I hope Harry feels better soon.  It's so tough when our furry family members don't feel good.

Nancy - I also am so sorry about what Harry and you are enduring.  I'm the same as Pat and Cliff; I joined the forum a couple of years ago to look for help with my Rudy.  The forum helped with great suggestions and support.  Please keep us posted.  We truly care and want to help in whatever way that we can.

Take care.  Hugs to you and Harry.

Hi, Doris, Melinda, Pat, Cliff and Ellie - Thank you so much for your kindness and suggestions to help out my Harry.  I decided against going to an internal medicine vet because I have already consulted with four different vets, along with our much-trusted vet of many years (who in the past referred us to a specialist when Harry had cancer), and the only other suggestions than what we were already doing involved doing a CT scan or a nasal probe.  The only thing either of those tests would reveal would be something that wouldn't be treatable for a 15-year old in a very weakened condition.

So I've made the devastating decision to say goodbye and have him put down tomorrow.  He's been struggling with this for about five weeks and has gotten gradually weaker and weaker, and now it's clear for the first time that he's really in distress, so it's time.

I'll be back on the forum soon (hopefully very soon) to get advice on finding a breeder or rescue organization in my area (NYC) to find Harry's successor.

Thanks again for your kindness,
Nancy

Nancy you've made a brave, hard choice.  There does come a time when interventions and tests cause more harm than good and can unintentionally bring about more pain than comfort.  I am really sorry Harry is so very ill.  I wish you comfort and him peace.

So sorry to have only seen this now, Nancy, and very sorry to hear of your need to have Harry put down.  You obviously did what was best for him and spared him unnecessary pain and discomfort from additional tests.

Hope we'll continue to hear from you in the forum.
